In a bid to increase the surveillance in the skies, India will soon clear the purchase of two airborne warning and control systems (AWACS). An estimated $800 million has been allocated for the procurement.

The price negotiations with Russia for the Il-76 platform, and with Israel for the radar, had been ongoing for quite some time. The deal is now nearing finalization with the allotment of the budget.

AWACS plats a very important role in securing the skies, as it provides live detection of airborne threats and can provide alerts much quicker than any ground-based radar.
