The Ministry of Defense finally cleared the plan for the procurement of 111 naval utility helicopters. The helicopters will be replacing the obsolete fleet of Chetak choppers.
The choppers will be procured under the ‘strategic partnership’ model. A total of Rs 21,738-crore has been sanctioned for the deal. It is expected that companies from the U.S., Europe, and Russia will be competing for the naval utility helicopters deal.
Per the information, 16 choppers will be procured in flyaway condition and while the remaining 95 will be built in India under “Make in India” initiative.
