In a major milestone, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Thursday successfully tested a crew escape module from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This is a major milestone in the direction towards a manned mission.
The test was a very critical part of the ISRO manned space mission. The escape module helps astronauts in the time of emergency when the rocket fails or explodes.
“The system is an emergency escape measure designed to quickly pull the crew to a safe distance from the launch vehicle in the event of a launch abort. The first test (Pad Abort Test) demonstrated the safe recovery of the crew module in case of any exigency at the launch pad,” the ISRO said in a statement.
ISRO has successfully tested the scaled down model of the space shuttle as well, and also launched a module in the last two years.
