The Indian government has recently cleared the acquisition of hovercraft for the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Army. The decision was made during the recently concluded Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting which was headed by Nirmala Sitharaman.
The hovercraft will provide a great edge to the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Army by providing the ability to travel at very high speeds over shallow water, sandbanks, mud flats, and swamps. Adding to that, it will also increase the capabilities to conduct amphibious [and] riverine operations.
The Indian Coast Guard already operates around 18 Griffon 8000TD hovercraft built by India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and the United Kingdom’s Griffon Hoverwork.
