In a move to upgrade their firearms, the Indian Army will be replacing the ageing Dragunov SVD 7.62 mm sniper rifle with new ones.
The Ministry of Defense has also cleared the purchase worth over Rs2,000 crore to procure over 17,000 light machine guns and 6,500 sniper rifles for the Indian armed forces. Those arms will be procured under the “medium of a fast-track procurement procedure”. This is one of the biggest rifle replacement deals ever.
The selection of a new sniper rifle is not yet finalized but the current Dragunov sniper rifle is not working well. As per some reports, the rifle fails to recognize targets at a distance of over 300 m at night and is not stable.
