In order to boost the “Make in India” initiative, the Indian government is in talks with Russia to manufacture the famous Kalashnikov rifles in India. A high-level team of the Ordnance Factory Board is also expected to visit Russia soon to assess the Kalashnikov facility and also further talks.
India is one of the largest users of Kalashnikov rifles (AK series). However, the numbers are not sufficient as the INSAS rifles which are the primary weapon of the Indian Armed Forces are facing lots of trouble and are not good enough for counter-insurgency perations.
The government is now looking to fast-track the deal in order to meet the armed forces requirements at the earliest date possible.
