The Indian Air Force, which was conducting the largest air exercise named “Gaganshakti-2018 Exercise,” concluded with a bullseye hit of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile from the Su30mki.
Interestingly the test was carried out by SU-30mki in the Malacca Straits which is the entry point into the Indian Ocean for Chinese vessels. As per the reports, the aircraft equipped with the Brahmos missile flew over 2000 miles where it performed mid-air refueling by IL-78MKI tankers. Airborne Early Warning Systems (AWACS) was also providing support to the aircraft.
This is said to be the second live test of the missile. The first was conducted last year over the Bay Bengal by IAF test pilots.
The missile is capable of hitting targets at a range of 300km with supersonic speed.
