In a major success, the state-owned Defense Research and Development Organization has completed the land-based user trials of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) prototype. The AIP will be installed in future submarines.
The endurance mode user trial of the land-based prototype of AIP for validation was completed successfully at Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL). The AIP system achieved all the primary parameters as per the set targets. The trial was carried out in presence of the Indian Navy. The underwater trials will be conducted soon.
The Indian Navy has decided to install AIP in all its Scorpene submarines, but installing AIP is not an easy task as lots of changes have to be made in the structure.
The AIP will increase endurance capacity, thus increasing operational capabilities.
