As a part of its “Act East Policy,” India is now moving forward to increase its military ties with Southeast nations like the Philippines and its neighbors. The plan of action of India-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation for 2016 to 2020 is committed to bringing peace and security to the region.
“It’s about time we start military cooperation, including possible joint exercises,”- Pritee Saran, secretary for East Asia of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
She also said that maritime security is a very large issue in the region which India sees as an emerging aspect and is also related to the trade relations between India and ASEAN. India also wants all disputes in the South China Sea between China and other ASEAN countries should be resolved peacefully through UN Laws.
In more recent times, India has worked extensively towards building relations with ASEAN nations which is also a part of India’s Act East Policy.
