Two procurement proposals cleared by Defense Minister
The Defense Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman has cleared the proposal for the procurement of 240 KAB-1500 bombs from Russia and Barak missiles from Israel.
The KAB-1500 bombs are a precision-guided bomb and will be procured from M/s JSC Rosonboron Exports, Russia at an estimated cost of Rs. 1254 cr. The bombs will be equipped in the Su-30mki and are designed to destroy ground targets such as railway lines, ammunition depots, bridges, military facilities and ships. It weighs around 1,100 kgs and has folding fins that allow it to maneuver.
The Defense Ministry also cleared the proposal for the procurement of Barak-8 Surface to Air Missile system for Indian Navy vessels. They will be procured from Israeli firm Rafael Advanced Defense System.
Nearly 131 Barak missiles and related equipment will be purchased at an estimated cost of $72 million. The missile is able to shoot down targets like drones, missiles, aircraft and helicopters.
