In a big move, the government of India has decided to modernize the weapons of infantry soldiers. The proposal is to equip the war footing soldiers with advanced weapons, mainly assault rifles.
The Defense Ministry is planning to procure more than three lakh assault rifles and close quarter carbines. The estimated budget of the proposed plan is Rs 10,000 crore. The weapons will be procured through global vendors in the fast track procurement route. Some of the rifles will be acquired from Indian manufacturers who would be building the gun based on Defense Research and Development Organization designs.
Soldiers manning the Line of Control will be equipped with the close quarter carbines They are also for the troops involved in counter-insurgency operations.
The Army has been looking for a solution as the current rifles in use are not capable to deal hard.
