Achieving a major milestone, the Indian Air Force on Thursday successfully performed mid-air refueling of Embraer Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C) from IL-78MKI.
This was the first time the Indian Air Force performed the mid-air refuelling of the aircraft.
The mid-air refueling capability helps the AEW&C to remain airborne an extended period lasting more than 4-5 hours. It is also the first time that an air-to-air refueling has been carried out on the Embraer platform.
The “Probe and Drogue” air-to-air refuelling requires an exceptional flying skill as both aircraft have to maintain extremely accurate flying parameters. Indian Air Force is one of the few Air Forces in the world which have this capability and the Embraer AEW&C has also proved its prowess in the category. The achievement has given a major boost to Indian Air Force’s operational capability.
